FamilyHvac.com Attends EPA's R-454B Refrigerant Educational Conference in Atlantic City

On January 9, 2025, the FamilyHvac.com team attended an educational conference at the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City. This event featured representatives from leading air conditioning and heating manufacturers, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), focusing on the industry\\'s transition to R-454B refrigerant.

Understanding the Transition to R-454B Refrigerant

The HVAC industry is advancing toward environmentally friendly refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP). FamilyHvac.com is committed to staying ahead of these changes to better serve our customers. The transition from R-410A, used for over two decades, to R-454B is underway. This means the end of manufacturing and sales of AC and heat pump systems designed for R-410A, as well as the phase-out of R-410A refrigerant production.

In the 1990s, the phase-out of R-22 refrigerant significantly reduced environmental impact. Similarly, R-410A will become obsolete, expensive, and scarce starting in 2025. We anticipate receiving new R-454B equipment and have been informed about the limited availability of R-410A systems.

FamilyHvac.com\\'s Commitment to Leading the Transition

FamilyHvac.com is at the forefront of this national transition. We are dedicated to maintaining existing R-410A systems to extend their lifespan and are experts in installing and servicing new R-454B systems. Our goal is to provide optimal efficiency, lower operating costs, enhanced comfort, and access to federal and utility rebates.

Benefits of R-454B Refrigerant

R-454B offers comfort, efficiency, and a significantly reduced GWP to meet regulations effective in 2025. In response to climate change, global leaders have proposed phasing down high-GWP refrigerants as part of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Although the United States has not fully ratified this agreement, many states are adopting these reductions.

Based on proposed regulations, it is anticipated that many U.S. states will limit the GWP of refrigerants used in HVAC applications to a maximum of 750, possibly as early as 2025. R-410A, with a GWP of 2,088, exceeds this limit. Therefore, the industry is developing new products utilizing R-454B, a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf, with a much lower GWP of 466, meeting the proposed 2025 requirements and aligning with future Kigali phase-down targets into the 2030s.

What This Means for Our Customers

FamilyHvac.com remains dedicated to providing our customers with the latest information and services during this transition. Our participation in the Atlantic City conference underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility and customer satisfaction.
