Troubleshooting and Repairing an AC System

Why is my air conditioner not working? If you notice your A/C making loud noise, A/C not cooling, or the air conditioner won't turn on, there could be a number of problems causing those issues. As a trusted air conditioner company, Family Heating & Air Conditioning is always here to help you diagnose and repair your system. Here are a few of the most common problems we see and the steps needed to repair them.

Should I Try To Fix My Air Conditioner Myself?

DIY AC repair is almost always a bad idea, this is due to the complexities of the system. No two systems are alike and without the proper equipment an attempt to fix your AC system yourself, or by a friend of a friend, could cause very big and even sometimes dangerous problems. With that being said, there are some things you can do to determine the problem and how severe it is before a technician visits your home.

1. Air Conditioner Not Cooling

When your AC doesn't cool down air it could be a sign of low refrigerant. While it might sound easy enough to top off the refrigerant levels, it is usually indicative of a leak in your system. You'll need a qualified HVAC technician to take a look and see what the culprit is.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen evaporator coil may not sound so bad, it's usually a sign your system is clogged, causing a lack of airflow within your AC system. This is typically because the air filter is too dirty. A dirty air filter can be replaced easily, but getting the dirt out of the system is where you'll need a professional HVAC technician. When you schedule a seasonal maintenance visit, this helps prevent the clogs that occur overtime from dirt and grime.

3. Air Conditioner Thermostat Not Working Properly

Does your thermostat seem to no longer have control over your A/C? If so, check the panel to see if there's any dust or debris inside that could be interfering with the operation. You may also have a loose or corroded wire in the wall. If all that fails, your thermostat may need to be recalibrated, which is something we can help with. Checking the batteries is something we suggest as well.

4. Air Conditioner Won't Turn On

This could be related to the thermostat problems we mentioned above, so always check that first. You may also have a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. If these are not the issue, it could be a sensor within the system, which will require a visit from a certified technician.

5. AC Making Loud Noise

A noisy air conditioner isn't normal. Typically, it's a sign of dirty fan motors or deteriorating internal components. If you discover this on a visual inspection, call in Family Heating & Air Conditioning for help with replacements.

Should You Consider Air Conditioner Replacement or Air Conditioner Repairs?

Deciding between air conditioner repairs or replacement all depends on the cost involved. In some cases, it will cost more to repair the system than to replace it. This depends on the age and current status of the system. When guiding you throughout the process we always layout a variety of options to choose from. At Family Heating & Air Conditioning, we'll help you make the decision that's best for your home and budget.
