The New EPA A2L R-454B Refrigerant
Revolutionizing the HVAC Industry
What’s the Buzz About R-454B Refrigerant?
The HVAC industry is taking a monumental step forward in environmental responsibility with the introduction of R-454B refrigerant. Designed to replace the widely used R-410A, this innovative refrigerant has a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP), helping to protect the environment by reducing ozone depletion and greenhouse gas emissions.
R-410A has been the standard in air conditioning and heat pump systems for over two decades. However, starting in 2025, the production and sale of R-410A systems and refrigerants will be phased out, making way for the cleaner and more efficient R-454B.
If you choose to repair your system instead of replacing it, we'll take the cost of the repair and apply it as a deposit towards your brand-new, trouble-free system when the time comes.

The Transition from R-410A to R-454B
Family HVAC is ahead of the curve in preparing for this transition. Our team is fully informed and ready to help customers navigate this change, whether by maintaining existing R-410A systems to extend their lifespan or installing the new R-454B systems for optimal performance and efficiency.
Why Is R-454B the Future?
In the 1990s, the phase-out of R-22 refrigerant marked a significant milestone in reducing environmental impact. Now, R-410A is following suit, with its high GWP of 2,088 exceeding new regulatory limits anticipated to cap at 750.
R-454B, a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf, boasts a dramatically reduced GWP of 466, making it a standout alternative. This refrigerant meets the proposed requirements set for 2025 and aligns with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which aims to phase down high-GWP refrigerants globally.
Benefits of R-454B Refrigerant
- Environmental Impact:
With a GWP of 466, R-454B significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions compared to R-410A. - Efficiency and Comfort:
Optimized for modern HVAC systems, R-454B ensures superior performance and energy efficiency. - Regulatory Compliance:
Meets anticipated U.S. regulations and future global phase-down targets, ensuring long-term availability and compliance. - Cost Savings:
Federal and utility rebates may be available for customers upgrading to systems that use R-454B.

Frequently Asked Questions
Refrigerants are chemicals that have heat absorption and heat rejection capabilities. Dupont is famous for the brand name “FREON” , which is a refrigerant. These refrigerants are used in Air Conditioning ,Heat Pump & Refrigeration systems. In conjunction with heat exchangers ,coils and compressors they are circulated to remove heat from the air that needs to be cooled and release it to an area that is not objectionable.
Over the years the environment and atmosphere has been damaged by these refrigerants which some scientists feel is a contributing factor to the global warming issues and depletion of our ozone protective layer in our atmosphere. Worldwide conferences which include the USA work together and place restrictions on the release and containment of these chemicals. A worldwide depletion number has been arrived at that reduces global warming and ozone depletion levels. Every few years these numbers are re-evaluated and lowered to reduce the depletion levels. Manufacturers and chemical companies need to create refrigerants and AC and Heat Pump systems that will meet these new depletion numbers and laws that protect our environment.
Nothing. It can be used until a major failure occurs which is why so many homeowners have invested in our Family Comfort Protection plan to get the most years from your existing system. The existing refrigerant will become obsolete. Repairs may not be cost effective and coils and heat exchangers do leak eventually so adding the existing R410A refrigerant may be cost prohibitive.
Most likely R410A refrigerant. This has been the standard in the industry for over 25 years. Older systems that may still be around that use R22 refrigerant.
FamilyHvac.com uses recovery and containment vessels to protect our environment from these refrigerants being released into our atmosphere. It is monitored by the EPA and a $25,000.00 fine could be issued to any company that knowingly recharges or releases refrigerants without determining the origin of the leak and making the appropriate repair. FamilyHvac.com understands that leaking systems use far more electricity due to less cooling effect and longer run times that reduces the comfort level and exceeds the cost of a new high efficiency system.
As of January 1, 2025 no more of the soon to be obsolete R410A Systems will be manufactured. FamilyHvac.com is now receiving new R454B systems and we will be fully stocked to supply our customers with the latest and greatest from our top manufacturers.
Yes! FamilyHvac.com also offers Federal ,Utility and EAP rebates for high efficiency equipment.
No! If your furnace is newer the air flow should be sufficient but FamilyHvac.com will test and take air flow measurements to ensure the system will carry the proper quantity of air to support your AC or Heat pump system. The indoor evaporator coil the is mounted on top of your furnace will need to match the R454B system and needs to be replaced. If you have a fan coil unit that is just supporting air conditioning or Heat Pump systems the indoor section which is a blower and coil will need tio be replaced.
No! The compressor outdoor condensing unit section and indoor coil will not support the new refrigerant. Both compressor and coils are of different sizes to properly circulate and pump the new R454B refrigerant.
Familyhvac.com has always been a step ahead for decades on the technology of the HVAC industry. There are many contractors and handy men that do not have the experience and education to give advice on the newest state of the art systems or proper handling of the new R454B refrigerant. Be careful to check all accreditations before investing any money on repair or replacement of your HVAC system.
Familyhvac.com was involved in the first A2L R454B refrigerant transition and handling conference on the east coast January 9th 2025. We were alerted two years ago of this transition and have worked towards this difficult transition period with our top manufacturers of Air Conditioning and Heat Pump equipment. On top of the understanding of the new R454B refrigerant and changes in equipment and proper installation processes and practices all of our technicians and office personnel are required by the owner of FamilyHvac.com Farrel Shuster to have many hours of hands on training before advising or installing any R454B systems. R454B is slightly flammable so special precautions and sensors on the new equipment must be fully understood. New specialty tools such as gauges, manifolds, recovery equipment and meters have been purchased by FamilyHvac.com to adhere to the requirements and safety that needs to be carefully addressed for the best and most efficient outcome of the installation.
